On April 21st<\/sup>, the Brazilian supermarket sector launched the Doa\u00e7\u00e3o Super Essencial<\/em> campaign, which will raise funds for the distribution of food vouchers worth R$ 100 to vulnerable families, who can use the vouchers to shop in any supermarket in the country. The campaign was launched by the Brazilian Supermarket Association (ABRAS) and will involve its 27 affiliates. The WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger, which has been discussing with ABRAS the creation of solutions to combat loss and waste in the food sector, and the UN Global Compact support the incitive.<\/p>\n

The campaign was launched at a press conference and Igor Carneiro, Senior Program Officer at the WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger and local partnerships focal point, represented the WFP at the event. In his speech, he presented global data on hunger and stressed the importance of the participation of the private sector in finding emergency solutions for rising hunger levels in the country. “The WFP Centre of Excellence considers that the current situation requires coordinated action, with the participation of all sectors, including the private sector\u201d, said Igor Carneiro.<\/p>\n

The R$ 100 vouchers can be used throughout the country and will be funded by donations from companies and individuals. The cards will be distributed in two ways: by the donating company \u00a0itself, as long as it follows the eligibility criteria established by states and municipalities; or by ABRAS\u2019 partner organizations, which include A\u00e7\u00e3o da Cidadania.<\/p>\n

The voucher can\u2019t be topped up, but it can be used several times to purchase food and other essential items in any supermarket chain until the total amount is spent. Alelo, Ticket and Sodexo are responsible for manufacturing and dispatching those vouchers. There will also be a hotline available to assist beneficiaries with any issues.<\/p>\n
