The event, hosted by the London School of Tropical Hygiene &amp; Medicine, in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and Dubai Cares, highlighted the economic and social impacts of school health and nutrition programmes, particularly in creating human capital, and the importance of investing in programmes backed by academic evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Balaban, Director of the WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger Brazil, spoke at the opening panel on research priorities from a programming perspective and shared some school feeding experiences developed in Brazil. Also part of the panel was Zhao Chen, from the China Development Research Foundation, and Vladimir Chernigov, Director of the Russian Social &amp; Industrial Foodservice Institute (SIFI). In his intervention, Daniel Balaban talked about the Brazilian school feeding programme, the South-South Cooperation efforts carried out by the WFP Centre of Excellence and his experience as a former President of the National Fund for Education Development, which is the institution within the Ministry of Education that runs and implements the Brazilian National School feeding Programme, known as PNAE.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He described the main characteristics of PNAE, which covers all primary education schools in the country, supporting over 40 million children. \u201cPNAE became a global reference in school feeding for many reasons: the programme is a fully national initiative, run and funded by the government; it is universal, reaching all children in public education in Brazil; it covers at least 30% of children\u2019s daily nutritional needs; and, most notably, PNAE was a pioneer in promoting purchases from smallholder farmers\u201d, said Daniel Balaban. He also highlighted that PNAE relies heavily on evidence and data, with the use of tools such as mobile apps and local school feeding and nutrition centres. \u201cWhen we produce data that shows the positive results that school health and nutrition programmes can yield, we are better equipped to advocate for these programmes\u2019 implementation and increased investment worldwide\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23949 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/print-1-e1622144367499.png\" alt=\"Na quinta-feira, 27 de maio, um evento marcou o lan\u00e7amento do Cons\u00f3rcio Global de Pesquisa para a Sa\u00fade e Nutri\u00e7\u00e3o Escolar, uma colabora\u00e7\u00e3o de 10 anos entre parceiros de pesquisa e de desenvolvimento, al\u00e9m e acad\u00eamicos que abordar\u00e3o e compartilhar\u00e3o pesquisas estrat\u00e9gicas para a tomada de decis\u00f5es baseadas em evid\u00eancias sobre sa\u00fade escolar e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o. O evento, organizado pela Escola de Higiene e Medicina Tropical de Londres, em parceria com o Programa Mundial de Alimentos (WFP) e a Dubai Cares, destacou o impacto econ\u00f4mico e social dos programas de sa\u00fade e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o escolar, em especial na cria\u00e7\u00e3o de capital humano, e a import\u00e2ncia de investir em programas baseados em evid\u00eancias acad\u00eamicas. Daniel Balaban, Diretor do Centro de Excel\u00eancia contra a Fome do WFP no Brasil, falou no painel sobre prioridades de pesquisa para o desenvolvimento de programas e compartilhou algumas experi\u00eancias de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar desenvolvidas no Brasil. Tamb\u00e9m fizeram parte do painel Zhao Chen, da Funda\u00e7\u00e3o de Pesquisa de Desenvolvimento da China, e Vladimir Chernigov, Diretor do Instituto Russo de Servi\u00e7o Alimentar Social e Industrial (SIFI). Em sua interven\u00e7\u00e3o, Daniel Balaban falou sobre o programa brasileiro de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar, os esfor\u00e7os de Coopera\u00e7\u00e3o Sul-Sul realizados pelo Centro de Excel\u00eancia do WFP e de sua experi\u00eancia como ex-Presidente do Fundo Nacional de Desenvolvimento da Educa\u00e7\u00e3o, que \u00e9 a institui\u00e7\u00e3o do Minist\u00e9rio da Educa\u00e7\u00e3o que executa e implementa o Programa Nacional de Alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o Escolar (PNAE). Ele tamb\u00e9m destacou que o PNAE se baseia fortemente em evid\u00eancias e dados, com o uso de ferramentas como aplicativos m\u00f3veis e centros locais de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o. &quot;Quando produzimos dados que mostram os resultados positivos que os programas de sa\u00fade e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o escolar podem gerar, nos tornamos mais bem equipados para defender a implementa\u00e7\u00e3o desses programas e o aumento do investimento em todo o mundo&quot;, disse ele. Ele tamb\u00e9m enfatizou o papel dos Centros de Excel\u00eancia do WFP, particularmente o do Brasil, no uso da Coopera\u00e7\u00e3o Sul-Sul para demonstrar experi\u00eancias positivas em programas de sa\u00fade e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o escolar, como o exemplo brasileiro. &quot;Trabalhamos para convencer governos e parceiros de que a alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar \u00e9 um investimento crucial, e o fazemos mostrando evid\u00eancias do que estamos dizendo&quot;, disse. O Centro de Excel\u00eancia do WFP no Brasil acompanhou de perto o processo da crescente import\u00e2ncia da alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar, especialmente na \u00c1frica, onde 39 pa\u00edses j\u00e1 estavam implementando programas de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar geridos e financiados pelos governos. &quot;Estamos muito gratos por termos apoiado a melhoria dos programas de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar em pa\u00edses como Benin, Qu\u00eania, G\u00e2mbia, Costa do Marfim, Mo\u00e7ambique e Burundi \u2013 sempre apoiados nos dados sobre o programa nacional brasileiro&quot;, disse ele. Ao discutir o papel do rec\u00e9m-lan\u00e7ado Cons\u00f3rcio Global de Pesquisa para a Sa\u00fade e Nutri\u00e7\u00e3o Escolar, Daniel Balaban destacou a necessidade de coletar e validar dados de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar em cada pa\u00eds. \u201cEsta n\u00e3o \u00e9 uma tarefa f\u00e1cil, mas \u00e9 o caminho certo para que possamos construir estrat\u00e9gias que apoiem os pa\u00edses na implementa\u00e7\u00e3o de projetos locais de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar&quot;. Zhao Chen, da China, tamb\u00e9m destacou a import\u00e2ncia da coleta de dados nas escolas para monitorar a aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o, consumo e desperd\u00edcio de alimentos, e tamb\u00e9m para acompanhar o desenvolvimento das crian\u00e7as. Vladimir Chernigov, da R\u00fassia, tamb\u00e9m sugeriu uma abordagem baseada na tecnologia e na energia verde. O evento tamb\u00e9m incluiu outros pain\u00e9is sobre resultados de sa\u00fade e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o em crian\u00e7as e adolescentes em idade escolar; a rela\u00e7\u00e3o entre sa\u00fade, nutri\u00e7\u00e3o e rendimento escolar; o impacto multissetorial de programas de sa\u00fade e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o escolar, utilizando an\u00e1lise de custo-benef\u00edcio; e como os dados podem contribuir para um apoio mais coordenado e eficiente para a sa\u00fade, nutri\u00e7\u00e3o e educa\u00e7\u00e3o de crian\u00e7as em idade escolar. Sobre o Cons\u00f3rcio Global de Pesquisa para a Sa\u00fade e Nutri\u00e7\u00e3o Escolar Uma Coaliz\u00e3o Global est\u00e1 se formando para ajudar os pa\u00edses a restabelecer, expandir e melhorar os programas de sa\u00fade e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o escolar, a sa\u00fade e bem-estar de todas as crian\u00e7as, fornecer uma rede de seguran\u00e7a para uma gera\u00e7\u00e3o, criar capital humano, apoiar o crescimento nacional e promover o desenvolvimento econ\u00f4mico. Informando e participando da Coaliz\u00e3o est\u00e1 o Cons\u00f3rcio Global de Pesquisa para a Sa\u00fade e Nutri\u00e7\u00e3o Escolar, uma colabora\u00e7\u00e3o de 10 anos entre parceiros de pesquisa, de desenvolvimento e acad\u00eamicos que abordar\u00e3o e compartilhar\u00e3o pesquisas estrat\u00e9gicas para a tomada de decis\u00f5es baseadas em evid\u00eancias sobre sa\u00fade escolar e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o. Juntamente com os seus parceiros, o Cons\u00f3rcio de Pesquisa desenvolver\u00e1 uma estrat\u00e9gia de pesquisa independente de 10 anos sobre sa\u00fade e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o nas escolas. A agenda de pesquisa ter\u00e1 como objetivos: fornecer evid\u00eancias sobre a efetividade de programas de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o escolar para resultados de aprendizagem, sociais e f\u00edsicos de crian\u00e7as e jovens em todo o mundo, incentivando o investimento em programas escolares de sa\u00fade e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o; e fornecer orienta\u00e7\u00e3o program\u00e1tica aos formuladores de pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas sobre as melhores pol\u00edticas a serem implementadas com rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 sa\u00fade, nutri\u00e7\u00e3o e educa\u00e7\u00e3o.\" width=\"1022\" height=\"679\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/print-1-e1622144367499.png 1022w, https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/print-1-e1622144367499-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/print-1-e1622144367499-768x510.png 768w, https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/print-1-e1622144367499-600x399.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1022px) 100vw, 1022px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He also highlighted the role of the WFP Centres of Excellence, particularly the one in Brazil, in using South-South Cooperation to showcase positive experiences in school health and nutrition programmes, such as the Brazilian example. \u201cWe work to convince governments and partners that school feeding is a crucial investment and we do so by showing evidence of what we are saying\u201d, he said. The WFP Centre of Excellence in Brazil has closely followed the process of a growing importance of school feeding, especially in Africa, where 39 countries were already implementing school feeding programmes managed and financed by governments. \u201cWe are very grateful to have supported the enhancement of school feeding programmes in countries such as Benin, Kenya, Gambia, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, Mozambique and Burundi \u2013 always backed by data on the Brazilian national programme\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>When discussing the role of the newly launched Global Research Consortium for School Health and Nutrition, Daniel Balaban highlighted the need to collect and validate school feeding data in each country. \u201cThis is not an easy task, but it is the right path so we can build strategies that support countries in implementing local school feeding projects\u201d. Zhao Chen, from China, also highlighted the importance of data collection withing schools to monitor food procurement, consumption and waste, and also to follow children\u2019s development. Vladimir Chernigov, from Russia, also suggested an approach based on modern technology and green energy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The event also included other panels on health and nutrition outcomes in school-aged children and adolescents; the relationship between health, nutrition and educational achievements; the multi-sectoral impact of school health and nutrition programmes using cost-benefit analysis; and how better data could contribute to more coordinated and efficient support for the health, nutrition and education of school-aged children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>About the Global Research Consortium for School Health and Nutrition<\/b><\/p>\n<p>There is a growing Global Coalition to help countries re-establish, increase, and improve school health and nutrition programmes, the health and well-being of all children, provide a safety net for a generation, create human capital, support national growth, and promote economic development. Within and informing the Coalition is the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/research\/centres-projects-groups\/research-consortium-for-school-health-and-nutrition#welcome\">\u00a0Global Research Consortium for School Health and Nutrition<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a 10-year collaboration of academic, research and development partners that will address and share strategic research for evidence-based decision-making on school health and nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>Together with its partners, the Research Consortium will develop a 10-year independent research strategy on school health and nutrition.
