{"id":28091,"date":"2024-10-10T12:25:34","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T15:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/?p=28091"},"modified":"2024-10-10T18:58:58","modified_gmt":"2024-10-10T21:58:58","slug":"missao-ao-quenia-leva-tecnica-de-cisterna-e-horta-para-melhoria-da-alimentacao-escolar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/en\/missao-ao-quenia-leva-tecnica-de-cisterna-e-horta-para-melhoria-da-alimentacao-escolar\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission to Kenya brings cistern and vegetable garden techniques to improve school meals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_28092\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28092\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28092\" src=\"https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-08-at-08.58.11.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-08-at-08.58.11.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-08-at-08.58.11-300x244.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-08-at-08.58.11-1024x832.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-08-at-08.58.11-768x624.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/centrodeexcelencia.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-08-at-08.58.11-600x488.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9WFP\/Jo\u00e9lcio Carvalho<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Providing school children with nutritious, locally produced food is the central objective of a technical mission to Kenya that began on October 5.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For 15 days, the Brazilian technicians, Luderl\u00e2ndio Andrade Silva, PhD professor at the Federal University of Campina Grande, and Jo\u00e9lcio Carvalho, agronomist and Partnerships Coordinator at the World Food Programme Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil, will promote participatory activities in schools in the districts of Ndunguni, Nkarini and Kalimbui. \u201cIn all of them we are going to develop a local school feeding model with the production, purchase and consumption of fresh and local food,\u201d said Jo\u00e9lcio.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Among the activities planned are the construction of a 16,000-liter cistern to collect rainwater, workshops on preparing school gardens, and activities on food and nutritional security, such as ways of storing food and seeds and preventing water contamination with homemade filters.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The mission is the result of a partnership between the government of Brazil, the WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil, the World Food Programme (WFP) in Kenya, the government of Kenya and the Rockefeller Foundation, with the aim of supporting countries to improve their school meal programs and accelerate sustainable expansion.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The mission\u2019s agenda focuses on the implementation of social technologies that will enable these communities to improve their resilience to climate change and boost the sustainable development of the food system.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Water<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to Jo\u00e9lcio, the cistern plays a fundamental role in school feeding.\u00a0 \u201cIt will be used to produce water for human consumption and the well-being of the students. In addition, the surplus will be used to irrigate the gardens to produce fresh food and seeds,\u201d he explained.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The school gardens turn the school into a self-sustaining structure. \u201cThey are gardens adapted to reduce water demand by 90% and guarantee nutritious vegetables every day, as well as being the nursery for seeds that we will donate to the parents of the student farmers, who will plant these seeds and then sell them to the schools,\u201d he said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jo\u00e9lcio pointed out that the food produced will be prepared on ecological, low-wood stoves to avoid deforestation and smoke poisoning.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn short, at the end of the two-week technical mission, three schools will be prepared with cisterns for collecting water, vegetable gardens for producing fresh food and seeds, and adapted stoves for less wood consumption and faster food preparation.
