Registration is now open for the free online course \u2018Food systems and climate: towards a just and sustainable transition\u2019, an initiative that aims to broaden understanding of the impacts of climate change on food systems and ways to promote sustainable and inclusive change. The course is available to everyone on the distance learning platform of the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Combating Hunger (MDS).<\/p>\n

The course was developed by the Josu\u00e9 de Castro Chair, in partnership with the WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil, the MDS and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC). The initiative forms part of efforts aimed at strengthening technical capacities and disseminating knowledge on food security, nutrition and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

Renowned for its academic output and for keeping alive the legacy of Josu\u00e9 de Castro \u2013 a doctor, geographer and one of the world\u2019s leading scholars on hunger \u2013 the Chair brings together experts, researchers and institutions dedicated to generating and disseminating knowledge on food systems, the human right to adequate food and the fight against hunger.<\/p>\n

The course introduces the key concepts relating to food systems and climate, discussing how climate change affects food production, access and consumption, as well as exploring strategies for a just and sustainable transition. The content has been developed to support students, researchers, public sector managers, professionals in the field and others interested in the subject.<\/p>\n

This course forms part of a broader training programme. Whilst this first course is open to the public, the subsequent modules will be aimed at public sector managers and technical staff involved in the \u2018Estrat\u00e9gia Alimenta Cidades\u2019 (Food for Cities Strategy), a Federal Government initiative focused on strengthening food and nutritional security in Brazilian municipalities.<\/p>\n
