Dear student,

Welcome to the "The PNAE and Smallholder farming" course, from the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE) , in partnership with the Laboratory of Information Technology and Educational Media (LabTIME) of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). This is a self-taught course, so there is no guidance or orientation from tutors. You are responsible for your own learning through the study of contents and activities. To receive the certificate, you must complete the Final Evaluation.

Syllabus presentation

The “PNAE and Smallholder farming” course has a 40-hour workload. It intends to make the student comfortable with concepts from the National School Feeding Programme, as well as provide them with critical thinking to understand the historical creation of the Programme, the smallholder farming’s foodstuffs acquisition process and the challenges inherent to the inter-sectoral movement of public policies and institutional purchases.

The course content is divided into 4 modules, whose reading and study must be done according to the sequence, as the topics are presented following a gradual logical pattern.

Module 1

The Brazilian National School Feeding Programme and Food and Nutrition Security
Module goals:

To present the National School Feeding Programme, its origin, evolution and connections to Food and Nutrition Security.

Study goals:

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

  • Understand the history behind the National School Feeding Programme;
  • Understand the importance of Food and Nutrition Security and its relationship with school feeding;
  • Identify the role of smallholder farming in the context of Food and Nutrition Security and the National School Feeding Programme.

Module goals:

To promote access to technical knowledge about the rules that control public institutional purchases from smallholder farming for the PNAE.

Study goals:

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

  • Understand the process of public purchases;
  • Realize the importance of integration between public policies and the organizations involved with acquisitions from smallholder farming;
  • Realize the importance of knowing local smallholder agriculture production.

  • Discuss sustainable public purchase strategies to promote social, economic and sustainable development;
  • Conceptualize a public call, applying it to the acquisition process of smallholder farming foodstuffs for the PNAE.
