The institutional purchase of smallholder farming for school feeding means:

• Responsibility for the calculation of financial resources to be transferred to states, municipalities and the Federal District, and the establishment of regulations in the scope of the PNAE.
• Addition of healthy foodstuffs produced by the region´s farmers in school feeding. This action, among other benefits, favours the smallholder farmer regarding alternative ways of production and goods commercialization.
• Incentive to the expansion of enterprises that supply industrialized foods for school feeding.
• Responsibility for the inspection of nutrition professionals and for the application of resources transferred to states.

We can say that smallholder farming in school feeding favours:

• The creation of short chains of production and commercialization; the strengthening of social relations; the valorisation of a diverse production that attends to public institutions´ needs, allowing the population´s access to healthy, quality goods in the perspective of food and nutrition security promotion.
• Incentive to the acquisition of foodstuffs produced outside of local areas, not considering social inclusion of local farmers.
• The accompanying of actions taken by states and the monitoring and inspection of the PNAE´s accountability.

• Prioritizes the kitchens´ infrastructure, amount of equipment, utensils, workforce and adequate space for school feeding.
• Favours the purchase of can food, sweets, composed and concentrated foods for school feeding.
• Avoids the purchase of diversified, organic and agroecological foods for school feeding.
