The WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger participated in the Global Agribusiness Forum to present possible solutions to world hunger. Held in São Paulo on 23-24 July, the event brought together some of the world’s leading experts in agriculture to discuss agribusiness and seek solutions to challenges such as hunger, socioeconomic development, and environment conservation.
Daniel Balaban, director of the WFP Centre of Excellence, participated in the panel “Is it possible to end world hunger?”, which, among other topics, discussed trends in agriculture, the impact of consumption, and food waste. Balaban highlighted in his presentation the contribution of smallholder farmers to the fight against hunger and the importance of cooperation among countries to overcome hunger. He also highlighted the role of school feeding as a simple intervention that has significant impacts on health, nutrition, education, gender, and rural development.
The Global Agribusiness Forum is held every two years by Datagro, Sociedade Rural Brasileira and partners. This year’s theme was “Crop science at service to the planet – time is now,” and the debates revolved around issues such as added value of agricultural production, the challenge of sustainability, and control of waste. The event was attended by large agribusiness companies and high-level government officials.
