The 3rd National Forum of School Feeding Counsellors, taking place on 14 and 15 May in Rio de Janeiro, featured the director of the World Food Programme (WFP) Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil, Daniel Balaban, at the opening table.
During his speech, Balaban stressed the importance of protecting and strengthening Brazilian public policies aimed at food security, especially the National School Feeding Programme (PNAE), which is considered essential in the fight against hunger and social inequalities in the country.
“Several countries around the world are seeking to give sustainability to their national school feeding programmes, which were created with the help of the WFP Centre of Excellence. The school feeding councils are a fundamental part of the sustainability of our school feeding programme,” said the director.
The event is organised by the National Forum of School Feeding Councils (FNCAE), in partnership with the Rio de Janeiro State School Feeding Council (CEAE-RJ). It brings together counsellors and experts from all over the country to discuss the challenges of school feeding and promote the exchange of experiences and good practices.
The programme includes debates on accountability, the use of technology in PNAE management, the role of CECANEs, the inclusion of family farming, food and nutrition education, and the role of councillors in promoting quality and inclusive school meals.
Created in 2010, the FNCAE represents around 90,000 counsellors who work on a voluntary basis to monitor and supervise the PNAE. The Forum’s mission is to train councillors and broaden their understanding of the legislation and resolutions governing the programme, promoting social control and strengthening public policy.
