The application of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were the subject of a course offered by the Labour Prosecutor’s Office (MPT, in Portuguese), on 4 and 5 October, aimed at the institution’s prosecutors and civil servants. Igor Carneiro, Partnership Officer at the World Food Programme (WFP) Centre of Excellence against Hunger Brazil, gave a lecture on the SDG indicators, especially SDG2, which aims to eradicate hunger and promote sustainable agriculture.
In his speech, Igor Carneiro detailed the current context of hunger in the world, according to data from the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI 2023) report. He then spoke about the connection between food waste and the fight against hunger, emphasising that this challenge will only be overcome with the strength of all sectors working together.
Finally, Igor Carneiro presented the work of the Centre of Excellence and the WFP in Brazil and around the world and highlighted the role of family agriculture in feeding society, the importance of state support for small producers and how climate change will increasingly affect food and nutritional insecurity, including food production.
“The driving force behind transformation in Brazil and around the world is through strategic partnerships, such as the alliance between the WFP and the MPT,” said Igor Carneiro. “The MPT is an institution that has a long history of defending the rights of the most vulnerable people throughout Brazil and will be a very important partner in building sustainable solutions to combat hunger and malnutrition, especially for people after rescue,” he added.
In November 2021, the WFP Centre of Excellence and the MPT signed a technical cooperation agreement for the development of joint actions, studies and projects. “Hunger is a current critical condition in the country, and working in partnership with the WFP presents an important aspect of the MPT’s work on behalf of the most vulnerable population in the country,” said Augusto Meirinho, Secretary of International Labour Cooperation at the MPT.
The course also presented the MPT’s partnerships with other UN agencies, such as UNICEF, ILO, UNHCR and UNOPS.
