The Brazilian government made a humanitarian donation of US$ 50,000 to support Algeria in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in Sahrawi refugee camps. A symbolic ceremony of handing over the Brazilian donation took place in late December. The initiative was coordinated by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), with the support of the WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger Brazil. The Brazilian Embassy in Algiers was in charge of processing the donation.
The funds were used to purchase cleaning and sanitizing materials for primary schools and kindergartens within the camps; for the production of information materials on COVID-19; and to support nurses working in the camps in the implementation of sanitary protocols. In addition to that, the donation was used to rebuild three schools that were damaged during a sandstorm in September 2020, to build an isolation centre for COVID-19 cases and to renovate a hospital at the Awserd camp.
