On 15 March, the Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) Centre of Excellence against Hunger Brazil, Daniel Balaban, participated in the seminar “External Control and the Fight against Social Inequalities”, promoted by the National Association of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Auditors (AMPCON, in Portuguese) at the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU, in Portuguese). The seminar proposed an objective debate on the challenges of economic progress and development in the country, under the prism of the fight to reduce inequalities.
Daniel participated in the panel “Public Policies to Combat Inequalities – Effective Transformation and Social Assistance”, mediated by João Augusto dos Anjos Bandeira de Mello, AMPCON’s new president. Also participating in the debate were Vilma Pinto, director of the Independent Fiscal Institution of the Federal Senate (IFI), João Ricardo Pereira, chief auditor of Aud-Benefits and Marcos Lima de Matos, director of the Social Assistance area of the TCU.
During the debate, the speakers reached the consensus that only with political and economic reforms will the country be able to solve the problem of social differences. “It is important that the country continues with its tax and fiscal reforms in order to reduce the differences between the richest and the poorest so that the country can finally put an end to hunger,” concluded Daniel.
The event also featured the lecture “Tax Reform and Social Impacts”, with Bernard Appy, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance for Tax Reform, and the panel “Role of Public Communication in the Agenda of Social Priorities”. After the seminar, AMPCON’s new president, João Augusto dos Anjos Bandeira de Mello, took over the presidency in a ceremony.
