WFP Executive Director participates in G20 discussions in Rio de Janeiro

The month of July 2024 is being marked by a series of important meetings of the G20 in Rio de Janeiro, which brings together representatives of national and international governments to discuss issues such as social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty. On July 22 and 23, the Ministerial Meeting of the G20 Development Working Group will take place, while on July 24 the meeting of the G20 Task Force for the Establishment of a Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty will be held. The WFP, represented by a delegation led by Executive Director Cindy McCain, is taking part in the meetings within the Development Working Group, under the Brazilian Presidency of the G20.

This will be the most significant week for the Brazilian Presidency of the G20 so far and will feature the most important ministerial meetings before the Leaders’ Summit, which will take place on November 18 and 19. The high-level week in Rio de Janeiro will consist of three ministerial meetings: Development, Finance and the G20 Task Force on the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.

The World Food Program (WFP) Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil will be part of the WFP delegation taking part in the meetings and emphasizes the fundamental role of the Brazilian presidency at the G20 in highlighting the fight against hunger as a priority issue in its mandate, centred on the theme “Building a just world and a sustainable planet”.

One of the actions of the Brazilian presidency at the G20 aimed at combating food insecurity is the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger, which aims to mobilise financial resources and knowledge for the implementation and expansion of actions, policies and programmes to combat hunger and reduce poverty.

‘This is an extremely important event not only for Brazil, but for the whole world. Brazil has years of experience in public policies to fight hunger and the WFP Centre of Excellence works to help share this knowledge with other countries through South-South Cooperation,’ says Daniel Balaban, Director of the Centre of Excellence.

Launch: The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2024 Report

In the midst of the G20 meetings, on Wednesday 24 July the UN agencies (WFP, FAO, IFAD, WHO and UNICEF) will launch the ‘State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) Report’, which brings the latest data on hunger, food security and nutrition in the world. The launch will take place at a side event of the Ministerial Meeting of the G20 Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty Task Force in Rio de Janeiro.

This year’s report is themed ‘Financing to end hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition’ and explores the current levels and gaps in financing for food security and nutrition in the world. It also provides guidance on innovative financing options to tackle the main drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition, as well as addressing the transformation of agri-food systems needed to rid the world of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030.
