At a ceremony held at the National Congress on 27 August, the Pact Against Hunger launched the Legislative Agenda ‘From Politics to the Plate’, a mapping of bills that have not yet been voted on and that focus on food security and combating food waste in Brazil.
The event was attended by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta, the co-founder and Chair of the Council of the Pact Against Hunger, Geyze Diniz, alongside several other authorities, such as the National Secretary for Food and Nutritional Security of the Ministry of Social Development (MDS), Lilian Rahal, who delivered a speech during the event.
Daniel Balaban, director of the World Food Programme (WFP) Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil, participated in the event and emphasised the importance of the initiative.
“The ‘From Politics to the Plate’ Legislative Agenda is an essential milestone in making the fight against hunger a political priority. There are many proposals in the National Congress that aim to strengthen family farming, reduce food waste, promote food and nutritional security, and readjust school meals. These are good proposals that just need to be processed.”
Among the initiatives are legislative bills focused on healthy eating in schools, family farming, and climate resilience. Learn more about the initiative at pactocontrafome.org.
