The National Supply Company (Conab) celebrated its 35th anniversary at a formal session held in the plenary hall of the Federal Senate on 14 May. The date marks more than three decades of essential contribution to public policies on food security, supply and support for family farming in Brazil.
‘On its 35th anniversary, Conab reaffirms its commitment to food sovereignty, the valorisation of family farming and the construction of a future without hunger, both in Brazil and in other partner nations,’ said Conab’s president, Edegar Pretto, during the event.
Conab is a strategic partner of the World Food Programme (WFP) Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil. Together, the institutions have strengthened national policies and contributed to sharing good Brazilian practices with countries in the Global South that face similar challenges in the fight against hunger.
“Conab is an example for countries around the world to follow. We at the Centre of Excellence have received delegations from various countries who, upon learning how Conab works, believe that their agricultural systems would be different if they had a supply company like ours,” said Daniel Balaban, director of the Centre of Excellence.
The technical and institutional exchange between the two organisations has boosted actions such as public food purchases, logistical support for vulnerable communities and the strengthening of local food systems.
In addition, cooperation has been an important vector in promoting South-South cooperation initiatives, connecting local production with school feeding programmes and social protection networks in various countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
