On 27 January, the new Regional Panorama of Food Security and Nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean will be launched. The 2024 edition of the Panorama highlights the importance of resilience to climate variability and extreme events for food security and nutrition.
The report presents a detailed analysis of the indicators of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and it aims to support countries in formulating public policies that reinforce the maintenance and strengthening of agri-food systems, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2), Zero Hunger.
The document was prepared jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The report concludes that 20 countries in the region are highly exposed to extreme weather events, with 14 considered highly vulnerable. The analysis reveals that, among the affected countries, there has been an increase in hunger of 1.5 percentage points, representing a major challenge to achieving the SDG2 targets.
Events such as droughts, floods and storms affect all stages of food systems, from production to consumption, jeopardizing progress in reducing hunger and malnutrition in the region.
