The World Food Programme (WFP) Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will be in Bahia from 14 to 16 October for the celebration of World Food Day.
With the theme “Water is life. Water is food”, this year’s campaign has planned actions in partnership with the Government of Bahia, in Salvador, to raise awareness among governments, the private sector, civil society and the population about the importance of water for food security.
On October 14 and 15, free activities will be held for the population in two public parks in Salvador, through a partnership with the Ecoroteiro project. On October 16, an event for guests will take place at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), with the participation of political authorities, international representatives, civil society and key actors for food in the country.
The role of water in family farming
The Beyond Cotton Project supports countries to reconcile the sustainable production of cotton and its by-products with food production and agroforestry systems. The project promotes the use of water management solutions that have improved the quality of life of farmers: drip irrigation systems, opening of cisterns, implementation of underground dams and the adoption of the so-called “economic beds”, which require about 50% less water in food production when compared to conventional ones.
These actions promote the production of fresh and diversified food both for consumption by family farmers and for sale to local markets, including school feeding programs. Learn more about the project here.
