The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) – the three UN agencies based in Rome – will host a webinar open to the public on 10 September 2026 to mark the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation. The initiative is also supported by UN Women.
Under the theme “Amplifying Impacts, Cultivating Equity: Rural Women Driving South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems”, the event will highlight experiences, solutions and partnerships that promote the transformation of food systems and the economic empowerment of rural women through cooperation among countries of the Global South.
This year’s celebration is aligned with the International Year of Women Farmers 2026 and will raise the profile of successful initiatives involving knowledge exchange, technical assistance and capacity building. Among the highlights is the Joint Programme to Accelerate Progress towards the Economic Empowerment of Rural Women (JP RWEE), implemented by FAO, IFAD, WFP and UN Women in various countries.
Representing the WFP, Vinicius Limongi, Programme Officer and Head of Programmes at the WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil, will take part in the event. He will share successful examples of South-South cooperation aimed at supporting governments in formulating and strengthening public policies to combat hunger and promote food security and nutrition.
Since 2017, the Rome-based agencies have jointly organised this international celebration, creating a forum for the exchange of knowledge with the aim of broadening the scope of solutions that contribute to sustainable rural development and the eradication of hunger.
