Dietitians from the Projects team presented the Centre of Excellence’s work during the Brazilian Nutrition Congress (CONBRAN), held from 12 to 15 May in Curitiba (PR). Considered the largest congress in the field in Latin America, the event discussed contemporary nutrition issues under the theme “Nutrition and Diet in times of Artificial Intelligence and Climate Emergency”.
The nutritionist and coordinator of the Centre’s Projects department, Eliene Sousa, took part in one of the event’s thematic panels on May 13, entitled “Anti-colonial training in nutrition: curricular challenges for food sovereignty and care guided by well-being”.
In her presentation, “The role of the nutritionist in international organisations: functions, competencies and contributions to global food and health policies”, Eliene addressed the UN’s involvement in issues relating to food and nutritional security and its strategic role in the development of global public policies.
The presentation highlighted technical cooperation projects run by the Centre of Excellence in partnership with the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (BC), such as ‘Beyond Cotton’, which promotes intercropping of food crops with cotton production in three African countries (Benin, Mozambique and Tanzania); ‘Nurture the Future’, which addresses aspects of scaling up policies to promote adequate and healthy nutrition (in Brazil, Peru and Colombia); and the AlimentaLAB initiative’s experience in building a hub for innovative initiatives from the Global South in the field of food and nutritional security.
On Wednesday (14), the Centre of Excellence’s nutritionist, Osiyalle Rodrigues, took part as a panelist in the “Nutrir Saber” session, dedicated to educational practices and innovative methodologies.
On that occasion, he presented the pilot experience of taking the Amuse-bouche game to a school in Benin, during a technical mission to the country, carried out as part of the Beyond Cotton Project (by the Centre of Excellence in partnership with ABC, the Brazilian Cotton Institute, the Federal University of Western Bahia, the WFP in Benin and the Beninese government).
Developed by the Centre of Excellence team, the board game is an educational tool for food and nutrition education, specifically aimed at children in a school setting to promote healthy eating habits.
