The World Food Programme (WFP) Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil launches its 2024 annual report The publication, available in Portuguese and English, highlights initiatives focused on combating hunger and promoting food and nutrition security through South-South cooperation activities developed by the Centre of Excellence.
Throughout the year, the Centre took part in important international events, such as the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty during the G20 Social in Rio de Janeiro, and actively contributed to strengthening public policies through technical cooperation.
In addition, the winning cooks and nutritionists from the reality TV show ‘Vida de Merendeira’ represented Brazil at the meeting of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries held in São Tomé and Príncipe, expanding the exchange of experiences in the fight against hunger.
Co-operation
Both the ‘Vida de Merendeira’ reality show and the study visits coordinated by the Centre of Excellence were carried out in partnership with the National Education Development Fund (FNDE) and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC).
The following countries took part in study visits to learn about aspects of the National School Feeding Programme (PNAE) and family farming: São Tomé and Príncipe, Armenia, Cameroon and Kenya.
Results
Among the main results are the training of managers in Brazil, Peru and Colombia to tackle malnutrition; the production of tons of food (sesame and beans) as a result of the Beyond Cotton Project in Mozambique; and support for the construction of cisterns and vegetable gardens in Kenya, benefiting 3,000 students and their families.
The WFP Centre of Excellence has also accompanied the progress of countries like Malawi, which, with the cooperation promoted by the WFP Centre of Excellence over more than a decade, now offers school meals to 48% of its schools, with the goal of reaching 100% by 2030.
In terms of visibility, the Centre’s work on social media saw a 150% increase in the reach of Instagram posts and an 8% increase in LinkedIn impressions.
