On June 18, Instituto Fome de Tudo and the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) will launch the “Hunger Doesn’t Go on Vacation” campaign, which aims to mobilize society to expand children’s access to food during school breaks and periods when classes are not in session.
The initiative stems from a concrete challenge: although approximately 40 million students receive school meals in Brazil, the school calendar covers about 200 days of the year, leaving 165 days—including vacations, breaks, and weekends—without this food safety net. During this time, many children are more vulnerable to food insecurity, especially considering that approximately 29 million children and adolescents live in vulnerable situations in the country (IPEA/UNICEF, 2025).
The initiative also addresses a broader context: in Latin America and the Caribbean, 167 million people are food insecure, according to data from the United Nations’ 2025 Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition.
For the Instituto Fome de Tudo, a Brazilian organization dedicated to combating hunger, the campaign reinforces the importance of ongoing mobilization. The WFP, the world’s largest humanitarian agency and winner of the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, contributes technical expertise and global experience in tackling hunger.
Open to the public, the campaign encourages individuals, companies, and institutional partners to participate, emphasizing that any donation, no matter the amount, can help ensure meals for those who need them most.
Donations can be made through the official website: www.fomenaotiraferias.com.
