BRASÍLIA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced today a first-of-its-kind partnership with Fome de Tudo to support school meals in Latin America and the Caribbean by rolling out activities in close collaboration with the WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil.
Fome de Tudo was born as a national movement that presents solutions to fight hunger and food waste. It is a non-profit non-governmental organization that endorses social initiatives and projects that promote the civic engagement of society in causes of common interest such as food waste and hunger. To do this, it relies on a network of specialists in food, technology, public policy, environment, sustainability, economics, retail, and social entrepreneurship.
As the global food crisis is pushing more children into food insecurity, school meals programmes remain invaluable safety nets for the most vulnerable, ensuring that children are well fed and stay in school. WFP is the largest school meals provider in the world. WFP data shows that for every US$1 invested in school meals, there is aUS$9 return on investment in countries that invest in school meals, and Fome de Tudo wishes to contribute to these important programmes and support WFP’s work in Brazil.
“This new partnership is a sign of our joint commitment to assist school-based programmes in Latin America and the Caribbean, rendering support to countries in its efforts to end hunger and malnutrition,” said Daniel Balaban, Director of the WFP Centre of Excellence. “Fome de Tudo brings its high-level experience in promoting social and philanthropic works and long-term experience in fundraising and promoting social causes related to hunger, smallholder farming and food waste,” he added.
In Latin America and the Caribbean alone, 80.3 million children benefitted from school meals in 2022, including breakfast, snacks, or lunch. Most of these children live in South America (63.2 million), followed by Central America (13.3 million), and the Caribbean (3.8 million). School meals programmes offer several opportunities to boost the participation of women farmers as well as youth and Indigenous producers in school value chains.
“Fome de Tudo believes in education, circular economy, and social entrepreneurship as tools for sustainable change towards a new model for social structure. Fome de Tudo is fully aligned with WFP’s mandate of ending hunger, achieving food security, and improving nutrition and wishes to contribute with WFP in achieving this bold and important goal,” said Úrsula Corona, CEO of Fome de Tudo.
